Cataloging Center Heads
October 10, 2001
Minutes
The meeting began at 9:00
a.m. Present were Mary Bissey,
Nancy Curran, Helen Neal, Holly Nordheden, Susan Peters, and Merdy Smith.
The minutes of the April 11, 2001
meeting were approved as written.
Non-MARC records: Merdy reported that 26,187 non-MARC
records were sent to TMQ for matching.
These records were matched on title, author and publisher, with TMQ able
to match 8600 records. These
records will be overlaid based on the Dynix bib number. There has been no decision at this time
on what to do with the remaining records, possibly further matches. Elaine is not currently working on LTN
non-MARC records. Mary reported
that Teresa Quick is about half done with CHNs Geology Survey maps. Nancy has stopped working on CRNs
non-MARC records. She believes she
is almost finished. Susan reported
that URN is working some on adult materials, but nothing was done on
children’s materials this summer.
Holly reported that ZDN has made no progress due to staffing
shortages. All agreed that new
non-MARC lists should be printed after the 8600 records are loaded.
Round
robin of reports:
Lincoln Trail Libraries
System: Merdy reported that
Lincoln Trail has hired a cataloger, Vanessa Whippo, for the Cataloging
Maintenance Center. All materials
for DuPage Library System have been completed, except five items a library
refused to send. The CORC
(Cooperative Online Resource Cataloging) Committee is working on guidelines for
accepting web pages to be cataloged.
Merdy is still working on cleaning up GSAFD headings in LINC. She reminded everyone to make sure to
use new headings.
Charleston Public Library: Nancy reported that Charleston has
purchased 7-8 properties to be used for the expansion of the library.
Champaign Public Library: Mary reported that Judy Barickman has
moved from Tech Services to Adult Services, so they are short one staff person
in Tech Services at this time.
Champaign’s building program has stalled, because costs are too
high. DVDs are very popular at
CHN, and they are adding a rental collection. Also popular are the Spanish language collection and the
leveled reader collection, but standard subject headings for both collections
are needed to make searching for these materials easier for the patrons to find
in LINC.
Danville Area Community College:
Holly reported that it has been a quiet quarter at DACC. She was a member of the bargaining team
for the faculty. The library will have
new hours, with open hours on selected Saturdays.
Urbana Free Library: Susan reported two new part-time
positions have been created at URN.
One is a cataloger in the Adult Services Department (Elaine
Hershbarger), and the other is in Young Adult reference (Carol Inskeep). There has been a surveyor in the
library recently, and building plans are progressing.
Cataloging changes/reminders: In the new version of Cat for Windows
(2.3), bib record merge can only be done by someone with level 5 or above security. This is a bug that will be fixed in the
next version. OCLC Passport for
Windows support ends 12/31/2003, but it will be operational for another year. In determining non-filing indicators ,
diacritical marks or special characters associated with an article are included
in the count; if not associated
with the article they are not included.
Chapter 9 of AACR2 has been totally rewritten and can be ordered from
ALA. It will be applicable
12/1/2001. Holly asked
if more fields could be displayed in the non-MARC record, such as volume and
date on serials. There are
problems with searching in non-MARC display for staff because all information
is not displayed. Merdy asked that
everyone look at all formats to see what is missing, and communicate through
email what needs to be changed.
This will be discussed at the next meeting, with a recommendation being
made based on the findings.
How to handle adult subject
headings for (e.g.) Spanish language materials: Mary distributed a draft of
the action item concerning local subject headings in field 690. A discussion followed concerning why
this is needed, plus some changes and additions to the wording of the document. Mary will rewrite and send to
everyone. If everyone agrees with
rewrite, Merdy will forward it to Jan to request action by the LINC Policy
Council.
