Cataloging Center Heads
December 6, 2001
Minutes
A special meeting of the Cataloging Center Heads was scheduled for December 6, 2001 in order to finalize the presentation of a revised policy and proposal of a new policy at the LINC Policy Council meeting to be held on December 13, 2001. The meeting began at 1:30 p.m. Present were Mary Bissey, Nancy Curran, Howard Grueneberg, Holly Nordheden, and Merdy Smith.
In which indexes should the local subject headings field (690 )be included: The CCH had originally emulated the indexing of genre headings (655) and had proposed that local subject headings (690) be indexed in the Subject Keyword and Combined Keyword indexes. However, David Dorman has informed us that it can also be indexed in the Subject List index. Having the 690 indexed in the Subject List index would not interfere with authority control and it would be beneficial for patrons. After discussion, it was decided to request that the 690 be indexed in the Subject List, Subject Keyword, and Combined Keyword indexes.
Should local subject headings (690) be added to all formats? : After discussion, it was decided that local subject headings should be added to all formats as appropriate. As is true when assigning other access points (6XXs), catalogers are free to choose whether or not they add 690s to different bibliographic records.
Add System Detail Note field (538) to Combined Keyword index: Discussion was held regarding Mary’s suggestion to include the System Detail Note field (538) in the Combined Keyword index. This would enable patrons to search, for example, for all the DVDs that are in LINC. It was unanimously decided to ask for this.
In summary, the Cataloging Center Heads requested the presentation to the LINC Policy Council of: 1.) a new policy permitting local subject headings (690) to be created in bibliographic records when Library of Congress Subject Headings are insufficient; and 2.) a revision to the Cataloging – Bibliographic Indexes policy (adding 538 and 690 fields to the Combined Keyword index, and adding 690 to the Subject List and Subject Keyword indexes)
The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
