October 8, 2003
Minutes
The meeting began at 9:00 a.m. Present were Nancy Curran, Howard Grueneberg, Helen Neal, Merdy Smith, and Nanette Wargo.
The minutes of the April16, 2003 meeting were approved as written.
Round robin of reports
URN: Construction is on schedule. Library will close for a month in February, 2004 for the move into the new wing. Remodeling of the old wing will take approximately one year. The adult department is still working on non-MARC records.
CRN: Library will be celebrating 100 years of service to the community. They are planning to remodel. Nancy works on an ³as needed² basis, so has not worked on non-MARC records.
CHN: Nanette is settling into the technical services coordinator position. Theresa has finished non-MARC records.
LTN: As of August, 2003, there has been a 36% reduction of non-MARC records in LINC. Due to budget cuts, delivery and CE courses have been modified. Cataloging is backlogged. Merdy explained CMC (Cataloging Maintenance Center) to Nanette. CMC was funded for FY2004, but LTLS did not know until September. Onarga Public Library District and Bement Public Library District are in the process of adding holdings in preparation for coming online. There are no new grants at this time to bring libraries online. LTLS is working with Dynix and an independent consultant on contract negotiations for the migration to Horizon.
Merdy talked about the error reports received from TMQ such as missing 007 in nonprint, incorrect filing indicators in 245, date in 260 not equal to date in fixed field, and invalid ISBN. MARC report catches these errors. Nanette did not think CHN was using MARC report.
Authority control processing is done monthly, and every two years, the entire database is sent for a refresh of authority control. This refresh will be done in January, 2004. A new version of the MARC report (2.19) is available to be downloaded from the Marc of Quality website. A client version of OCLC Connexion is now available. End of life for Passport has been extended until at least December, 2004. As of August 1, print versions of OCLC documentation will no longer be available. All user guides, etc. are online. Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee standards can be found on the Illinois State Libraryıs web page.
Merdy presented information on workshops. Cost is $20 for IOUG members, and $30 for non-members. One PC would be needed per person attending the workshop. Workshops could be held at LTLS or other libraries. Howard is not interested in this type of workshop. Nancy and Nanette will check with other staff to see if there is any interest.
Howard explained how he catalogs archival materials. He showed various unusual items that normally do not have records in OCLC, and talked about how he creates records for those items.
The next meetings will be Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 9:00 a.m., with a general discussion on how we catalog serials.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
